Construction is underway on the Region of Waterloo International Airport’s $44 million expansion project that will double the size of facility in the next six months.

The project includes runway expansion, construction of two buildings that will feature baggage carousels, holding areas, food services, retail and pre-board screening.

In June, Amico Infrastructures Inc. was awarded the $25 million contract for airfield pavement rehabilitation and terminal early works.

“It is an exciting time for the Region and today is an important milestone as the airport continues to grow and drive a thriving economy,” said Regional Chair Karen Redman. “Airline partners have recently announced an increase in destinations and frequency of flights, which will move the airport to the next level in world-class service.”

The project is an important anchor in the region’s economy and will facilitate growth over the coming decades, add jobs to the economy, help attract businesses and support the tourism industry.

“This investment in the airport will help to ensure we are attracting people and companies to put down roots in Waterloo Region,” said Chair Redman. “This growth is just the beginning as we build a community that is globally competitive and one of the world’s greatest places to live.”

Terminal expansion work is expected to be complete in Spring 2022.

“We welcome the expansion of the Region of Waterloo International Airport. The increased commercial service into our Region coupled with increased capacity gives our destination a competitive edge and bodes well for the strength and growth of the community.” – Minto Schneider, CEO, Explore Waterloo Region

“Flair is extremely proud and excited to be bringing truly affordable fares to the Region of Kitchener-Waterloo and it is wonderful to see the tremendous customer demand for our services from YKF,” said Stephen Jones, president and CEO.

“The expansion of the airport facilities is a measured and appropriate investment to provide a great customer experience at the airport and we look forward to filling it with happy travellers and to driving continued economic growth in the region.”

YKF is a full-service facility which supports commercial, corporate and general aviation. The airport is home to 25 businesses that employ 300+ people that together contribute more than $90 million annually to Waterloo Region’s economy.

“This announcement is not only exciting because it promises increased investment in facilities and equipment which contribute to better on-time performance, and a more enjoyable experience for passengers; but this is also exciting for our local team who have grown by over 250 per cent as a result of the hard work and vision of the committed team at the Region of Waterloo Airport,” said Executive Aviation president Nelson Bradshaw.
