A joint venture of Maple Reinders and Bird Construction has been selected to be the general contractors to build the $125 million Wastewater Treatment Facility (WwTF) upgrade for the City of Barrie.
In a statement, Maple Reinders describes the project as the largest Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) wastewater treatment project in Canada’s history.
“Use of the IPD delivery model is growing in popularity in the Canadian infrastructure sector and is particularly well-suited for projects where a high degree of trust and transparency is required between the owner and project partners, and where multiple projects need to happen simultaneously,” the contractor said in a statement.
The project will take approximately eight years to complete and includes Advanced Nutrient Removal Solution for the existing plant, plans for the expansion of the facility to 96 Megalitres per day, Digester Capacity Expansion, Peak Flow Attenuation Facility, a new Hydro Substation and other critical features.

Bird says it will lead the project’s construction activities and “will provide input into the planning and design processes to support and contribute to their successful planning and delivery.
