Brampton Council has endorsed a concept plan for the city’s last remaining undeveloped area.
Spanning 4,000 acres and representing 1/16th of the municipality’s total area, Heritage Heights is in northwest Brampton, stretching from Mayfield Road to the Credit River valley, and from Winston Churchill Boulevard to Mississauga Road.
“Creating complete, sustainable and connected communities that allow residents to maintain a high quality of life is a priority for City Council and is essential in helping us achieve our Brampton 2040 Vision,” said Mayor Patrick Brown.
“As Brampton’s last undeveloped area, Heritage Heights is an exciting opportunity to make it right from the start. I am confident that this concept plan will do just that.”
The area was highlighted in the Brampton 2040 Vision as the proposed location for a new Town Centre – a complete, full-service, mixed-use place with work and housing options.
The concept plan for Heritage Heights reflects best practices for creating a community where future residents and employers can enjoy a healthy lifestyle and high quality of life. It is based on extensive community engagement, and sets the framework for a sustainable, livable, vibrant, and healthy place to live, work, learn and play.
There are substantial housing and jobs growth opportunities under the endorsed Heritage Heights concept plan that features a range of housing options with convenient access to transit, including a proposed GO station and a connected network of trails and open spaces.
“The 2040 Vision is bringing about real change in how we plan, including looking at all development as part of a whole. The Heritage Heights plan is a vital piece to achieving these goals and I am proud to endorse it,” said Martin Medeiros, Regional Councillor and planning and development committee chair.
Central to the plan is a north/south urban motorway, including a dedicated truck only lane, in place of the proposed GTA West Transportation Corridor through Heritage Heights. This main boulevard will create an urban mixed-use heart for the community where residents and visitors will be able to shop, enjoy local restaurants, start a business and be part of a healthy, active and vibrant lifestyle.
A proposed Wellness District, which includes lands for a potential future hospital and additional medical support services, is located along the main urban motorway. The plan will result in a fully connected, modern community with development being carried out in the most environmentally friendly way.
An extensive public engagement process will continue with stakeholders and city staff will also undertake the required technical studies, and work closely with other levels of government, with a goal of having a revised secondary plan, the next stage of the process, completed by the end of 2020.
