Unless you’ve heard about this initiative, you probably would never associate ready-mix trucks with art.

However, Barrie-based The Sarjeant Co. Ltd. has managed to support the MacLaren Art Centre and encourage high school art students with a unique design competition annually since 2011. After successfully completing every high school in Simcoe County and Muskoka in 2018, the project was carried over and started again from the beginning to carry on indefinitely.

The MacLaren Art Centre is a regional public art gallery serving the residents of Barrie,  Simcoe County and surrounding area. The gallery has a permanent collection of 26,600 works of art held in trust for the public and presents a year-round program of world-class exhibitions, public art projects, education activities and special events.

In the Sarjeant Design Project, a local artist is commissioned to visit selected schools throughout Simcoe County and Muskoka and “design arts with the students for our concrete mixer drums,” the company says. The project is designed to foster the creative talents of young people in the Barrie community.

“Every May, each of the designs from the participating students are displayed in the MacLaren’s Molson Community Gallery on an inventive “drum roll” that shows the 360-degree designs off to best effect. Ultimately, three to four designs are selected for transfer to the truck drums and the beginning of this new fleet.”

The winners of the 2019 competition are: Ava Raymond of Bradford District High School, Caiti Hatton of Barrie North Collegiate Institute, Leanna Lawson of Innisdale Secondary School and Julia Correia of St. Peter’s Catholic Secondary School.
