Hamilton Albion Falls South Access & Viewing Platform Project Design Visioning & Visual Analysis

Industry Name: Heavy/Highway/Utilities

Trade Name: Bridges/Pedestrian Bridges

Project Street: Mountainbrow Boulevard

Project City: Hamilton

Detail Of Services: Albion Falls is a 19-metre cascade waterfall located at the southernmost tip of the Upper King’s Forest Park and forms part of the environmentally sensitive area of the Red Hill Creek Escarpment Valley. The site is a popular destination for locals and tourists who want to view the falls, access nearby trail systems and enjoy the natural landscape setting. To safely improve access and views to Albion Falls while protecting the site’s natural and cultural heritage, the City has undertaken studies and investigations to determine the feasibility of constructing a south viewing platform and access. An appropriate location for the access and viewing platform has been determined, how ever a re-evaluation of the design elements and overall vision is required. The Successful Proponent will be responsible for developing appropriate design concepts to ensure that the structure better responds to the unique environment in which it is located to preserve the natural scenery and blend with its surroundings. The design concepts will be presented by the City to approval agencies having jurisdiction, stakeholder groups and the public for their input and ultimately, selection of a preferred concept. It is imperative that the design concepts fulfill the City’s project mandate and the mandate of the Niagara Escarpment Commission. The Successful Proponent will be responsible for submitting a Visual Impact Assessment to the Niagara Escarpment Commission for the selected design. It is the Successful Proponent’s responsibility to ensure that the concept options have clear design visions that meet the project’s goals, preserve the natural scenery of the Escarpment, are constructible, will remain within budget, and use materials that are suitable to the site’s environment and can be maintained by City operations staff.
