Southern Ontario

Hamilton Studio District mixed use development

Location: Hamilton

Stage: Design planning

Momentum Developments plans a film and production campus on the Barton-Tiffany Lands by the intersection of Barton Street W. And Tiffany Street, and the new West Harbour GO Transit station near the bay in Central Hamilton.

Project elements include:

  • A film and television production campus with purpose-built modern sound stages, production offices, support facilities and a back lot;
  • other studios for post-production animation visual effects game development and music;
  • a crew training facility for the local talent pool that could also play a role in job creation;
  • office buildings for film industry suppliers and media digital and technology companies;
  • collaborative and creative workspaces geared towards the artistic and creative industry communities;
  • two residential towers;
  • retail space; and
  • pedestrian-oriented public space.

The first sound stage building would be a conversion of existing space and could begin construction next summer.

IKEA Urban Store

Location: Toronto

Stage: Design planning

IKEA is designing a 50,000 sq. ft. “small format retail store with showroom and ordering kiosks,” DataBid says, noting that the project is preliminary and awaiting site selection.

Eastern Ontario

NCC Rideau Hall Operations Zone redevelopment stage 2

DataBid reports that the National Capital Commission (NCC) is seeking an architect as a consultant to rehabilitate the Rideau Hall Operations Zone (RHOZ) as a whole, and co-ordinate construction a new office building. “The intent is to centralize all NCC property management employees within the RHOZ,” DataBid says

The NCC says the office building is to be designed and construction to meet the international Passive House Standard as Passive House Plus, and the Canadian Green Building Council Zero Carbon Building Design and Performance..

“In the contract the consultant sub-consultant(s) and specialist consultant(s) collectively are referred to as the design Team. Altogether the scope of the Design Team’s services includes investigation and analysis of project requirements validation of design options detailed schematic design options and support to obtain necessary approvals detailed design development numerous design packages for competitive tender and site services – administration and site review of the construction work.

“The NCC has retained a construction management firm to deliver the work of this contract. The construction manager (CM) will work collaboratively with the Design Team and the NCC’s departmental representative (NCCR) team. The CM is required to support the development and analysis of implementation options for the project managing the work sequencing cost and construction of approved design solutions.”
