EllisDon wins National Earth Award for Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital

The Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) presented a National Earth Award to EllisDon at the second virtual National Awards Gala last month.

EllisDon Facilities Services at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital and Halton Healthcare also achieved the BOMA Toronto Best Gold Standard earlier this year.

At 1.6 million square feet the facility, opened in 2015, is three times the size of the old hospital, which still exists across town. While a greater footprint was determined as vital to serve the needs of the community over the next 30 to 40 years, the enhancements had to extend far beyond the extension of bricks and mortar.

Teaming with technology giant Cisco Systems Inc. and contractor EllisDon Corp., Halton Healthcare Service’s $2.7-billion facility is the first digital hospital in Oakville and one of the first new hospitals to be built in the area in the past 30 years.

Construction totaled 1.5 million sq.-ft. on a 50-acre greenfield parcel of land and EllisDon was the majority partner of the construction Joint Venture to build this hospital. EllisDon was also a partner on the development and facility management teams.

New hospital departments include complex continuing care, rehabilitation, renal dialysis, acute inpatient care, maternal child care, inpatient and outpatient adult, child and adolescent mental health, secondary and tertiary level programs, family rooms, lounges, shower facilities, kitchenettes, and retail services.

The facility buildings include four main sections:

  • five-storey section for complex continuing care and rehabilitation that houses a number of outpatient programs, such as nephrology, and includes the mechanical penthouse;
  • 10-storey inpatient tower section containing patient bedrooms, operating theatres, and pre-and post-operative support functions;
  • four-storey therapeutic and diagnostic imaging section that houses emergency care, diagnostic imaging, ambulatory clinics, maternal/child services, adult mental health and a penthouse; and
  • fourth section serves as the two-storey main hospital entrance and connects the rehabilitation block to the inpatient tower block.

All buildings include full or partial below grade basement levels. There are 33 elevators servicing the main hospital and three elevators servicing the parking garage. Parking consists of 2,100 parking spaces, including 1,180 spaces in a six-level parking structure of approximately 400,000 square feet and 920 surface spaces. The parking garage is a pre-cast concrete structure in conjunction with a cast-in-place reinforced concrete foundation, slab-on-grade and shear walls.

“Smart” patient rooms will allow patients to access the Internet and operate the television from a bedside terminal, which will also permit control of ceiling-mounted patient lifts and the room’s lighting system.

The BOMA Canada Earth Awards recognize excellence in resource preservation and environmentally sound commercial building management. Entrants for both the Earth and The Outstanding Building of the Year Awards must also be BOMA BEST Certified.
