Concrete Ontario is hosting a complimentary tilt-up seminar on August 8 in Woodbridge, to be followed by a site visit to see the practice in action.

Seminar participants will be treated to breakfast and an introduction to tilt-up concrete construction, followed by a tour of the worksite at Toronto District Christian High School, where Ontario Concrete award winner Tilt Wall Ontario Inc. will show how the method is being employed.

Tilt-wall is a method of casting large concrete panels on the worksite, then raising them into position by a crane. Although the method has traditionally been used for building warehouses, its use is becoming popularized in other building types, including schools, churches, retail centres, and office buildings.

According to the Tilt-up Contractors Association (TCA), the method is faster, cheaper, provides a strong structure, and allows for flexibility in design.

Ontario’s first concrete tilt-up built home was completed in 2017 by TiltWall Ontario’s founder Len Overbeek, who projected the 6-bedroom home would be 30 per cent more energy efficient than a comparable wood-frame home. From the outside, the home is indistinguishable from a typical Ontarian residence.

Other notable tilt-up builds in the province include Port Hope’s police station, Humber College’s North Campus Academic and Student Services addition in Etobicoke, and Half Moon Bay Elementary School in Ottawa.

Concrete Ontario (Ready Mixed Concrete Association of Ontario or RMCAO) provides information and advocacy for the concrete and construction industries across Ontario, and represents 96 per cent of all concrete production and manufacturing companies in the province.
