The provincial government says it is funding a diversity of research programs, including one at York University where Prof. John Gales is studying how new materials, like engineered timber, as well as heritage materials, behave in fires.

The $700,000 investment in Gales’ research will expand the scope of what the lab can test.  Overall, the government says it will spend $22,851,155 on 86 research infrastructure projects, as part of an overall approximately $41 million allocation.

“York University’s research excellence is rooted in creating positive impacts in the lives of individuals and communities,” said Rhonda Lenton, the university’s president and vice-chancellor.

“Professor Gales’ lab examines how materials can help make buildings and homes – and the people and families who live and work in them — safer from the risk of fire, and we are grateful to the Government of Ontario for supporting this important research.”

About half of the overall provincial funding, through the Ontario Research Fund – Research infrastructure program, will provide research institutions with funding to support infrastructure needs, such as modern facilities and equipment.

The balance of the funds allocated focus on “early researchers” and genomics, the statement said.
