London highway bypass plan abandoned after 50 years

Ontario Construction News staff writer

A plan to extend Highway 3 into Elgin County has been abandoned, more than 50 years after it was designated by the province for a bypass in the communities of Aylmer and Malahide Township.

After years of lobbying the province to remove the designation that he says held back many acres of potential growth, London-Middlesex MPP Jeff Yurek achieved his goal.

Now communities can make plans to build more industry or housing developments.

The stretch between St. Thomas and Aylmer has good roads, services and quick access to Highway 401 just up the road.

Also, the change will make a portion of land in Aylmer’s existing industrial park available for development.

Yurek said he is excited to think about the potential opportunities.
