Habitat for Humanity Grey Bruce is preparing to deliver Christmas presents to two local families, in the form of a semi-detached home.

Excavation work has started, and construction will follow at the 4th Avenue site with a team of Habitat volunteers and new COVID-19 safety procedures in place.

“Number 1 is we’re limiting the number of people on the site to 10, including our staff and volunteers,” executive director Greg Fryer said in an interview with the Owen Sound Sun Times.

COVID-19 safety procedures will be posted.

Habitat is recruiting volunteers to work in teams of five to seven people to participate in “team build days,” Fryer told the Sun Times.

The goal is to finish construction in December.

The raised bungalows will have two bedrooms in the lower level and one bedroom, a living room, kitchen and main bath on the upper level.

Local families have been selected.

Habitat for Humanity Grey Bruce is building two, three-bedroom homes at Neyaashiinigmiing as part of a partnership with the Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation that began in 2017.

Construction began on those homes June 1 and the recipient families have been selected by the community’s chief and council

Recipients of Habitat for Humanity homes are required to contribute at least 500 hours of volunteer “sweat equity” toward the construction of their home or other Habitat projects, pay a mortgage back to the organization and partner with Habitat.

Habitat for Humanity has built 11 homes at Neyaashiinigmiing so far.

With the latest six homes built in the community in 2019, the Grey-Bruce branch of Habitat has built a total of 50 homes in the region since its inception in 1987, including 13 in Owen Sound.
