The Ontario Association of Architects (OAA) will be focussing on the topic of problem solving at its annual conference in Quebec City from May 22 to 24.

The association’s website says that “from climate change to housing affordability to social cohesion, architects are catalysts for transformation.” Conference continuing education topics include lessons on operating under the new Construction Act and new business modelling in the wake of disruptions to the status quo.

Several of the sessions include information on making sustainable and carbon-neutral buildings.

The conference begins with the OAA’s annual general meeting on Wednesday, and presentation of The G. Randy Roberts Service Award in celebration of the profession of architecture.

Events also include a recognition lunch, and keynote address from Charles Fishman. Fishman is a journalist who will illustrate with personal stories how individuals can make a difference through action and applying their skills and creativity.

The conference will end in the presentation of the SHIFT challenge, an OAA initiative that challenges the profession to identify and address an infrastructure issue, either physical or social, where using architectural thinking can advance insight and innovation.
