The Ontario government has announced $1.3 million for infrastructure upgrades, repairs and maintenance at Petrolia’s Charlotte Eleanor Englehart Hospital.

Funding announced Dec. 21, is from the government’s $182.6-million Health Infrastructure Renewal Fund and the Community Infrastructure Renewal Fund. It will pay for upgrades and replacements of infrastructure such as roofs, windows, fire alarms, back-up generators and security systems, as well as urgent projects such as upgrading HVAC systems to enhance patient and staff safety against COVID-19 and improving infection prevention and control measures.

Sarnia-Lambton MPP Bob Bailey said the funding would make a big difference.

“This funding will ensure that patients at Bluewater Health’s Petrolia site can continue to access the care they need in safe, comfortable environments and that the local health care system is prepared to respond to any scenario as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to evolve,” he said.

“The Ontario government is committed to ensuring that Bluewater Health remains a world-class health care facility delivering top-rated care to its patients.”

Bluewater Health president and CEO Mike Lapaine thanked the government for its investment in its Petrolia site.

“We are excited to see how much progress has been made so far in our efforts to upgrade and redevelop this important community hospital,” he said in a statement. “This investment by the Ontario government will ensure there is access to first-class health care in Petrolia for generations to come.”

A total of $50 million will be provided to hospitals for urgent projects.

“These crucial investments will help build the capacity needed to end hallway health care, while ensuring our hospitals have the tools they need to improve the quality of care for patients and continue responding to COVID-19,” said Health Minister Christine Elliott.

In March 2021, the government committed up to $696.6 million in funding to help cover historic working funds deficits and strengthen the financial stability of hospitals across the province.
