A global pandemic has not stopped ambitious plans to create a new tool library and ‘makerspace’ in Orillia.
The volunteers behind the Orillia Tool Library & Makerspace continue to work on acquiring a space to house tools, to offer programming and provide a space for people to create.
“Due to the current health emergency and restrictions, our progress has slowed a bit, but we are still working behind the scenes to secure a suitable location and grow our inventory of tools that will be available to the public,” said Braden O’Neill, secretary of the enterprise.
Despite that, O’Neill and Matt Thomson, the president of the group behind the initiative, thought now would be an ideal time to have a tool drive and arrange pickups of tools, equipment or machinery.
“People may be cleaning out the garage or basement and may have duplicates of tools, or tools they no longer need,” said O’Neill.
He said they will accept small hand tools such as chisels, wrenches and squares, or power tools such as circular saws, cordless drills, and items such as extension cords and ladders.
“We will also pick up heavier equipment if it is something that will be in demand by members of the community,” said O’Neill, who hopes businesses might also step up with donations.
“We hope that local businesses and contracting firms will also participate in donating items, as they often have tools that are a little more difficult to acquire.”
Curbside pickup of items is being offered – by appointment – for the entire month of May.
“We are asking that the items are in good working order,” said O’Neill, adding a photograph or description of the tool(s) is helpful.
