York University’s Osgoode Professional Development, an affiliate of Osgoode Hall Law School, is offering a comprehensive professional development program November 11-15, 2019 in Toronto, on the practical knowledge and skills needed in crucial construction law concepts.

“Construction is increasingly complex, and there is an escalating expectation for all stakeholders to know how to effectively manage costly risk on projects, and you need to be prepared,” says program lawyer Alexandra Karacsony.

The 5-day program will be chaired by leading construction lawyers Geza Banfai and Jason Annibale, both with McMillan LLP, and Howard Krupat, with DLA Piper LLP. They and “an expert faculty of high-profile specialists including the Rt. Hon. Beverley McLachlin, former Chief Justice of Canada, Master Charles Wiebe, with the Ontario Superior Court of Justice and Sharon Vogel, with Singleton Urquhart Reynolds Vogel LLP, will provide critical information and practical guidance for owners, general/major contractors, and subcontractors/trades/suppliers to navigate the challenging risks in this high-stakes area, from contract formation through to dispute resolution,” Karacsony said.

The program includes interactive lectures, workshops, live demonstrations and a rare “View from the Bench” panel featuring McLachlin, Wiebe, and world-renowned adjudicator, Dr. Cyril Chern, with the Dispute Board Federation (Geneva).

Other topics in the 5-day program include:

  • Differing types of project delivery models used in Canada, including key players, risks and when to use them;
  • Key issues in construction contracts, including a breakdown of key terms, a playbook and an expert demonstration;
  • An in-depth review of bidding and tendering principles and the legal and technical issues underlying construction claims;
  • Top 5 things in key areas of law impacting construction, including environmental, insolvency/restructuring, insurance, surety bonding, labour and occupational health and safety; and
  • Strategies and tips for key stakeholders involving dispute resolution, technology and current and emerging trends, including a “fireside chat” and expert panel discussions.

Participants can join the 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in-person program on November 11-15, 2019, at Osgoode Professional Development Centre, 1 Dundas St. W., 26th Floor, Toronto.
