Pickering seeking input for waterfront redevelopment project

The City of Pickering is inviting feedback on the long-term planning and vision for its waterfront and Nautical Village.

A public survey and virtual story board is available until Aug. 31, 2021. This initial round of public engagement focuses on the entire length of the waterfront within Pickering, including the Nautical Village, and surrounding parks and trails.

Future engagement opportunities will focus on specific waterfront themes, and subsequent announcements will be posted on the project page.

In 1997, a Mayor’s Waterfront Task Force was established to help plan for the future of Pickering’s waterfront, and established the following vision:

“The Pickering Waterfront should create a distinct sense of place,” said Mayor Dave Ryan. “This sense must be nurtured by not only our heritage and unique natural setting, but also by what the waterfront represents to Pickering residents and visitors of all ages and abilities.”

From 2000 to 2014, the waterfront underwent a number of improvements, including:

  • waterfront protection and restoration efforts in partnership with the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA);
  • construction of Millennium Square, Beachpoint Promenade, and the waterfront boardwalk;
  • improvement of Frenchman’s Bay Harbour entrance;
  • implementation of interpretive stations and waterfront signage; and
  • promotion of waterfront events and festivals.

The city is also conducting a Beachfront Park Revitalization & Needs Assessment Study to address a specific portion of the waterfront that has been significantly impacted by high water levels and major storm events.

“Pickering’s waterfront is the shimmering jewel of our community. It’s important that we remain thoughtful with our approach as to how we not only improve these special spaces, but also protect them, as we continue to see community growth as well as increased tourism and activity around these destinations,” Mayor Ryan said.
