Ontario Premier Doug Ford was in Pelham on August 8, to announce funding to improve road conditions through key projects including lighting, paving, sidewalks and cycle lanes in the area.

2.5 km of Pelham Street is to be fully reconstructed in the $5 million project, which was nominated for a portion to be covered under the Rural and Northern funding stream of the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP).  The province’s share of the funding would be $1.6 million.

“Good roads get people to work and home more easily and safely, so they can spend more time with the people they love,” said Laurie Scott, minister of infrastructure. “People in and around Pelham have been waiting for this announcement, and our investment will address local priorities while also reducing administrative burden on local governments.”

“Improving roads helps connect people with jobs, and businesses with customers. With our plan, businesses, families and workers can count on an Ontario that will move faster than ever before,” Ford said. “Too many people are spending too much time stuck in traffic. That’s a waste of time and money. These nominated projects will help change that.”

Ford also announced that $23.9 million in provincial funds through the Public Transit Stream of ICIP will help pay for 24 transit projects within Niagara Region, including some new buses, an operations facility, and new fare boxes that allow for tap payment from phones and debit and credit cards.

Investing in Canada is a 10-year, $30 billion cost-shared program that helps municipalities repair or build critical infrastructure. The projects will now go to the federal government for approval through the program before they can move forward.

The Province has nominated 144 projects to the federal government for funding under the Rural and Northern stream. Some projects have received federal approval to begin construction.
