Roadbuilding and heavy construction workers with Labourers International Union (LiUNA) Local 527 have gone on strike after voting down a 13.5 per cent three-year offer from the National Capital Road Builders Association. The vote was 184 to reject and 119 to approve.
“Unfortunately, the National Capital Road Builders Association (NCRBA) has refused to address our members’ demands,” reads a statement on the LiUNA Local 527 website. “Therefore, a strike has been called . . . for LiUNA Local 527 members working under the NCRBA agreement (construction of roads, water & sewer, bridges, tunnels, curb and sidewalks; including light rail construction.
The strike excludes members working under the provincial railroad collective agreement.
Local 527 represents workers in Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec in construction of roads, bridges, water and Sewer, curbs as well as building power generators, industrial manufacturing, retail and the health care sector.
RB & HC sector collective agreements are negotiated locally with three unions in one agreement. Operating engineers and teamsters’ unions voted to accept the agreement rejected by labourers.
No talks are currently scheduled.
