‘Substantial completion’ of renovations at University of Ottawa Heart Institute brings seven-year project to a ‘near end’

Renovations at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute (UOHI) were recently completed, bringing to an end a busy time at the institute that included a 146,000 square foot expansion.

The institute, along with Infrastructure Ontario, announced that redevelopment reached substantial completion, Jan 18. The project stretches back to 2013, when Infrastructure Ontario and the institute issued a request for qualifications to build and finance the institute’s Cardiac Life Support Services Redevelopment project. The project had a contract value of $162 million.

The new addition, the cardiac project, was completed in April 2018, featuring:

  • Adding five floors of clinical and in-patient services
    • Expanded support services such as biomedical engineering and data services
    •  Adding approximately 146,000 square feet of space, 90,000 of which will house life support services such as cardiac catheterization, cardiac surgery and the cardiac surgery intensive care unit .

The redevelopment/renovation work that ended last month included:

  • Renovating about 60,000 square feet of space
  • Providing support services for the heart catheterization/electrophysiology suite, surgical suite and the cardiac
  • Intensive care unit
  • Relocating the cardiac imaging suite.

The University of Ottawa Heart Institute is an academic health science centre dedicated to understanding, treating and preventing heart disease. The expansion/renovations will accommodate the changing needs of the area resulting from shifting demographics and technological advancements, and will improve access to high quality, specialized cardiac services for residents in the Champlain Local Health Integration Network region, says the institute.

Quick Facts about the expansion/renovation:
