Toronto-based architectural and urban design firm Bogdan Newman Caranci Architects and Urban Design (BNC) has been renamed following the retirement of Joseph Bogdan and Angelo Caranci.

The 50-year-old practice will operate as BNKC Architecture and Urban Design (BNCK), led by Elie Newman and Jonathan King, the architects say in a news release.

The design practice has a global portfolio including the College Park Redevelopment in Toronto  (1989), Old Hyde Park Village in Florida (1984), The Commons of Uptown Waterloo in Waterloo (ongoing), the Brantford West Gwillimbury Library and Cultural Centre (2012) and the transformation of the Bishop Strachan Junior School (2004) and Senior School (2017) in Toronto.

Its portfolio includes other institutional, heritage, mixed-use, residential, commercial buildings, urban design projects, and master plans across Canada and around the world, including Al-Hareer New City Master Plan in Kuwait.

“Joseph and Angelo’s sense of collaboration and business acumen has established the legacy upon which the company’s future as an integrated architecture practice will prosper,” says BNKC principal Ellie Newman. “Jonathan’s expertise in design, firm management and mass timber positions the firm well in contemporary architecture to continue to lead and innovate.”

“It’s a tremendous honour to call BNKC my home and to support the core elements that continue to be the bedrock of the practice: our responsive approach to clients; attention to detail; and tenacious focus on getting it right,” said King, principal at BNKC. “It is also about embracing innovation and sustainability in a meaningful way.”

Old Hyde Park Village, 1982 (Tampa, Florida)
77 Wade Avenue, Ongoing (Toronto, Ontario) – Since joining the firm in 2018, King’s work includes the signature mass timber commercial building located in Toronto’s Bloordale Village. At eight stories high and 150,000 square feet, it will be one of the tallest such developments in North America
