The Building Union of Canada (BUC) has allegedly been attempting to certify unionized marble, tile, and terrazzo trade workers in Ontario, while The Brick and Allied Craft Union of Canada (BACU) struggles to negotiate contracts with the workers who are currently represented by the group.

Three-year collective agreements between industrial, commercial, and institutional (ICI) trades and their unionized employees expired recently, and a temporary competition period was allowed while negotiations occurred.

Collective agreements between the Tile and Terrazzo Employer Bargaining Agency and the unions vying to represent workers have been put off until votes can be counted, which may not be until mid-September. Votes will determine which union will be certified before an agreement can be finalized and ratified.

David Bromell launched the BUC in 2012 which “aims to restore the pride and confidence in union work.”

The BACU represents bricklayers, tile-setters, masons, cement finishers, and more. It was formed in 1998 as an independent union, through which members could be “free from irrelevant parent unions.”
