Wellington County building rural hospice facility

The County of Wellington council is donating two acres of land to build a rural residential hospice facility on the Wellington Place campus in Aboyne, near Groves Memorial Community Hospital, Wellington County Museum and Archives and Wellington Terrace.

The site is on the east side of Wellington Place near nature trails.

An advisory group including a local lawyer, architect and builder will meet next week to discuss ways to get support from the province including funding – about $1 million for construction of an estimated 4,000-square-foot facility, and another $1.3 million for operating costs to start.

The six-bed facility will provide palliative care to Wellington County residents and families and will be built on a two-acre parcel of land near Wellington Terrace and the Groves Memorial Community Hospital.

“County Council is pleased to support the new rural residential hospice facility at Wellington Place,” said Warden Kelly Linton. “This new facility will provide essential end-of-life care in a comfortable home-like space. During palliative care, it is so important that residents have the opportunity to be close to their loved ones and receive the respect, dignity and care they deserve.”
