West End Connectors reaches construction milestone on Eglinton West XTown

Crews broke ground in July and are now approaching a significant construction milestone on the 9.2-kilometre project, completion of the tunnel launch shaft site.

Transportation Minister Caroline Mulroney visited the site last week, along with Minister of Infrastructure Kinga Surma.

“As work advances on all of our priority subway projects, we can proudly say we now have shovels in the ground and construction is well underway on both the Eglinton Crosstown West Extension and the Scarborough Subway Extension,” Surma said.

West End Connectors was hired to design and build the tunnels. Their team is made up of a mix of international companies who have experience working on other major transit projects in Canada and around the world, including:

The extension of the Eglinton Crosstown LRT will run 9.2 kilometres from the future Mount Dennis LRT station to Renforth Drive and will operate mainly underground, helping to reduce travel times and improve access to jobs, schools and other destinations throughout the Greater Toronto Area.

Two tunnel boring machines are expected to arrive in early 2022 and each can tunnel 75 metres per week and remove 500 cubic metres of earth each day. Stay tuned for more information about a tunnel boring machine naming competition coming later this year.

Metrolinx and Infrastructure Ontario are working together to deliver the project, which is estimated to be complete by 2030-31. Work will complete a continuous rapid transit line across the east end of Toronto into Mississauga, bringing more people and jobs closer to transit and making it faster and easier for people to move around the region.

It’s a key pillar of the Province’s historic $28.5 billion subway expansion program, which also includes the Ontario Line, the Yonge North Subway Extension, and the Scarborough Subway Extension. Together, these projects will add more than 40 kilometres of new subway service to the rapid transit network.
