A consortium led by Bird Construction Ltd. has started working on a $20 million Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) detachment in Mississauga, part of a six-detachment project awarded to the public-private consortium in 2018 by the previous Liberal government.

Ontario Minister of Infrastructure Monte McNaughton and Solicitor General Sylvia Jones were in Mississauga on May 13 for a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Highway Safety Division detachment at 2735 Argentia Rd. as part of the second phase of the previous provincial government’s OPP modernization plan, which the new Ford government has now undertaken.

Like the other detachments being upgraded, Mississauga’s existing OPP Highway Safety detachment in Port Credit — which patrols and services portions of the QEW and highways 401, 403 and 410 in Peel Region — is more than 40 years old.

The overall Infrastructure Ontario (IO)contract value for the six detachments is $182 million.       The consortium designing, building and financing the projects includes NORR Architects; MCW Consultants Ltd. as the engineer; Bird Design-Build Construction Inc.; and Bird Capital Limited Partnership as the financial advisor.
Along with the Mississauga site, the contract includes police buildings in Clinton, Hawkesbury, Little Current, Marathon, Parry Sound, Moosonee, Fort Frances and Orillia.

The new 17,000 sq. ft. Mississauga structure will serve multiple purposes, with large evidence vaults, three holding cells, as well CCTV monitoring and collision reporting centres.

“Our government’s commitment of $182 million for nine OPP detachments across Ontario will provide officers with modernized tools and technology to better protect our families and loved ones,”  McNaughton said in a news release.

.           “Traffic safety is a core function of the OPP and our Highway Safety Division members who work out of the Mississauga Detachment patrol some of the busiest highways in North America. I am pleased that a modern new facility will allow them to deliver efficient, professional traffic safety services better than ever,” said new OPP Commissioner Thomas Carrique.

Work on all the projects is expected to be completed by late 2020.
