The City of Burlington has launched a new zoning bylaw project to make the process easier for developers by:

  • making the rules easy to use
  • reflecting modern zoning practices
  • streamlining development approvals and
  • implementing the objectives and policies of the new Official Plan (Burlington Official Plan, 2020)

This project will create a new zoning bylaw with updated set of rules for land use planning and development across Burlington.

Phase 1 will focus on supporting more housing options in Burlington neighbourhoods. An online survey is available until July 31, to collect information on housing strategies, council’s direction to implement four units as-of-right and the federal housing accelerator fund action plan.

City staff is also working on an official plan amendment with a goal of increasing housing options.

Phase 1 – Residential Zones will focus on using planning tools including the Official Plan and Zoning Bylaw. These new policies and regulations will benefit current and future residents and get us closer to the vision for housing in Burlington.

“This new zoning bylaw will help to enable more housing in our community. We are updating our zoning bylaw in phases and Phase 1 will address residential zoning to offer housing solutions to property owners, builders and developers to look at ways to add more types of housing across Burlington,” said Jamie Tellier, director of community planning. “As we go through the project, we’ll also reach out to the community for feedback to help us create the new zoning bylaw.”
