The Town of Petrolia will receive almost $13 million from the provincial and federal governments for improvements at the Bright’s Grove Water Treatment Plant.
Work includes construction of a new water intake pipeline, intake well, and low lift pumping station. Work includes the installation of a passive intake screen, protective crib, a frazil ice and zebra mussel control system, and re-purposing the existing plant for construction of a pre-filtration system.
It’s the largest of 144 water infrastructure projects across Ontario that will share over $140 million – rom roads and community centres to public transit and water and wastewater systems, 144 water infrastructure projects are included.
Shawanaga First Nation will receive over $4 million to build a water treatment plant, a project that includes construction of a new water treatment plant building, pumps, tanks, and other equipment and a connection to two new groundwater supply wells.
Also, the City of Sarnia will use over $4 million to replace the Vidal Street South Area watermain. Work includes replacement of approximately five kilometres of watermains along eight streets, equipment upgrades, and restoration of disturbed sites to help improve reliability and capacity of the transmission infrastructure and increase access to potable water.

“Investment in critical infrastructure is a pillar of sustainability to a growing city like Welland, and the Dain City Secure watermain project is an important realization for our residents. Funding from our provincial and federal partners strengthens our infrastructure and brings greater peace of mind to our residents, which pays dividends long after the work is complete,” said Welland Mayor Frank Campion.
The Government of Canada announced more than $190 million and Ontario is providing over $140.5 million. Local communities will spend more than $108.5 million on projects including:
Welland
- Installation of approximately 1,500 metres of watermain and seven new hydrants on Canal Bank Road
- Roads and sidewalks impacted by work on this project will also be restored
Havelock-Belmont-Methuen
- replacement of over 500 metres of watermain along George Street and installation of four new fire hydrants
- reconstruction of affected roadways, sidewalks, and driveways
Kingsville
- replacement of over 3,200 metres of watermains on several streets
- installation of 234 water service lines and 24 new fire hydrants
Ojibways of Onigaming First Nation
- replacement of over 4,400 metres of watermains along nine community roads including Onigaming Road, Anishinaabe Road, School Loop, and Ketemiikana Road
- renewal of fire pump in existing water treatment plant
Over the next 10 years, Ontario has planned investments of over $148 billion to support access to quality, reliable high-speed internet, and the construction, rehabilitation and modernization of new schools, hospitals, public transit, roads and bridges.
“These 144 projects will provide increased access to clean water, improve the reliability of our water systems, and protect health and safety,” said Kinga Surma, Ontario minister of infrastructure.
