Toronto Community Benefits Network (TCBN) and several pre-apprenticeship training delivery partners from the GTA and Hamilton area are gathering for the NexGen Builders Annual Retreat at Polonia Park in Niagara-on-the-Lake on Sat. Aug. 24.

This year’s theme is “A Decade of Building Together” and the day will include education, networking and entertainment for leaders in the construction and skilled trades industry.

A highlight of the day will be the Green City Build Skills Competition, a team event where participants build structures using sustainable materials to showcase skills learned in our different programs.

Green City Build will foster teamwork and collaboration. Here’s an overview of the activity:

  • Scavenger Hunt for TCBN Dollars: Teams will search the park for hidden TCBN Dollars, which will be used as currency to purchase building materials.
  • Materials Store: We will set up a store managed by volunteers/staff, where teams can buy materials such as wood, string, nails, paint, screws, plastic tubing, glue, and tape (and any other materials we are able to source).
  • Building Challenge: Using the purchased materials, teams will work together to construct various structures, such as benches, dog house, chairs, raised Garden beds, photo frames, or abstract designs – ensuring all is done with sustainable materials.
  • Judging Criteria: Structures will be evaluated based on structural integrity, efficient use of materials, sustainability and unique design/ creativity.
  • Additional Challenges: Teams can earn extra funds by completing tasks like sitting out members for a short period, performing a skit, or building without verbal communication.
