A long-term care home in downtown Barrie is launching the first phase of a 20-year expansion plan.

Victoria Village has applied to rezone properties on its 6.7 acres of land to build a new 128-bed facility, affordable residential housing, and commercial and community use space.

City council approval is needed to change existing institutional special provision zoning on 76 Ross St. and 61 Wellington St. W. to include additional residential uses and to amend the zoning on the land located at 150 Toronto St. and 54 Ross St., from residential multiple dwelling second-density and institutional to institutional special provision.

Victoria village“The exciting thing for us is not only serving residents that live here in the village, but also seniors that live here in the community,” Bill Krever, Victoria Village president and CEO said at a public meeting. “That’ll be done with those community and commercial spaces especially, but of course, our priority is the long-term-care expansion right now.”

Currently, the waitlist for a bed at Victoria Village is about five years.

Ontario has already approved the 128-bed, $60 million expansion.
