2020 a record year for construction in Brantford

The City of Brantford recorded over $255 million worth of construction in 2020, the strongest year in the city’s history.

“The record-setting construction value for 2020 is an indicator of the success of the construction industry in Brantford working hard every day to make the city a better more prosperous community,” said Mayor Kevin Davis.

“I’m very grateful for municipal staff that recognize the importance of managing and supporting City growth. I thank them for everything they do to ensure that Brantford can continue to grow in this uncertain time. “

He credited the success to Brantford staff quickly adapting through the pandemic and “keeping development moving.”

The $255 million represents 1,078 building projects in the residential, institutional, commercial and industrial sectors. The record set this year exceeds the previous record from 2005 by over 20 per cent.

“The strong construction trend in Brantford continued to the end of 2020, despite the never-before-seen challenges the industry faced,” said Andy McMahon, chief building official and director of building services.

“I am very proud of our staff and thankful to the development community for working together to keep development going during these unprecedented times. We are ready for any further challenges the industry may face in 2021, and we look forward to another very strong construction year.”

Highlights of the year include:

  • The year-to-date total construction value for 2020 is $255.191 million for 1,078 permits issued, compared to 2019 when the construction value was $199.053 million for 1,136 permits issued for the same time period. This represents an increase of over $56 million or 28 per cent.
  • The year-to-date total construction value of $255.191 million exceeds the previous yearly record of $211.828 million set in 2005 by over 20 per cent.
  • A total of 67 building permits were issued in December, having a total construction value of $15.016 million.
  • 14 building permits were issued in December in the Single Detached Residential (New) sector of construction which had a total construction value of $4.445 million.

“Having a record-breaking year for development is a significant achievement, especially in the midst of a global pandemic, said Brian Hutchings, chief administrative officer.
