The KSMM 2020 construction team, consisting of the Garden River First Nation, Shwe Miikaan Corp. and Miller Paving Ltd. has been awarded a contract to redevelop a Northern Ontario highway.

The provincial government announced the $16.9 million project for 20 kilometres of paving on Highway 17B. Work includes paved shoulders, turning lanes and new lighting on the route, which runs parallel to the Trans-Canada Highway between Echo Bay and Sault Ste. Marie.

The work was awarded through Ontario’s Aboriginal Procurement Program.

The KSMM 2020 team is scheduled to start work on Hwy. 17B this summer and complete the work by next fall.

Ontario says it will spend $641 million on road and bridge work in Northern Ontario in 2021-2022.
