The replacement of the Alexandra Bridge linking Ottawa and Gatineau is moving into its next phase after the federal government awarded a $79-million contract to a consortium led by Webuild, Samsung C&T and Green Infrastructure Partners.
Capital Crossing Constructors (CCC) will advance the approved design, develop project requirements and prepare for the eventual deconstruction of the more-than-120-year-old bridge and construction of its replacement.
CCC is made up of Webuild Civil Works Inc., Samsung C&T Ontario 1 Inc. and Green Infrastructure Partners Inc. The project will be delivered through a progressive design-build model, allowing the project team to work collaboratively to refine the scope, schedule, pricing and risk management before major construction begins.
Public Services and Procurement Canada will work with the consortium to maximize the use of Canadian steel, aluminum and other domestic materials while creating opportunities for Canadian and local suppliers during the design, deconstruction and construction phases.
“Canadian skills and ingenuity are at the heart of the work to replace our national capital’s oldest interprovincial road bridge,” Joël Lightbound, Minister of Government Transformation, Public Works and Procurement, said in a statement.
The replacement bridge, known as the Motion concept, received Federal Land Use and Design Approval from the National Capital Commission in January 2026.
Its design features three curved arches inspired by the Ottawa River and incorporates heritage considerations with modern transportation needs.
Construction of the new bridge is expected to begin in 2028, creating future opportunities for heavy civil contractors, subcontractors, fabricators and Canadian material suppliers.
The project will eventually see the aging Alexandra Bridge deconstructed and replaced with a new interprovincial crossing designed to serve the National Capital Region for decades to come.
