Aecon Group Inc. has announced that its consortium, Red River Biosolids Partners General Partnership, which includes Oscar Renda Contracting of Canada Inc. and MWH Constructors Canada Ltd., has secured a contract with the City of Winnipeg. The project will enhance the Biosolids Facilities at the Winnipeg North End Sewage Treatment Plant (NEWPCC) under a Progressive Design-Build contract model, with Aecon serving as the lead partner, a 33.3% interest.

The initial phase of the project involves a development contract valued at $95 million, aimed at advancing the design and finalizing the scope and costs of various project components. Aecon’s portion of this contract will be added to its Construction segment backlog in the third quarter of 2024. Upon successful completion of this phase, the team will move into the implementation phase, which includes final design and construction execution, with substantial completion anticipated by 2030.

The NEWPCC is a critical facility, providing 70% of Winnipeg’s wastewater treatment capacity and is the largest sewage treatment plant in the city. The scope of the project encompasses the design and construction of a new biosolids facility, along with modifications to the existing primary clarification system.

Additionally, Aecon is collaborating with Oscar Renda Contracting and the City of Winnipeg on the NEWPCC Headworks Facilities Upgrade project, further strengthening its involvement in enhancing the city’s wastewater management infrastructure.

“Building on our team’s work at the NEWPCC since 2021, this contract for another vital component of this project enhances our portfolio of collaborative contract models,” said Jean-Louis Servranckx, president and CEO of Aecon Group Inc. “We are committed to safely delivering this project and working alongside our client and partners to extend the operating life of this essential facility.”

The North End Sewage Treatment Plant project is also notable as it ranks No. 36 on ReNew Canada’s 2024 Top100 Projects report, underscoring its significance within the construction and infrastructure sectors.
