Construction has been underway for about four months and officials gathered for an official groundbreaking at the site of Barrie’s future transit terminal last week.
“We are now standing in the new geographic centre of the city,” Mayor Alex Nuttall said at the groundbreaking. “The ability for our transit terminal to be in a better place to allow for more efficient service, to allow for more effective service, makes a whole lot of sense.
A $29.2-million contract was awarded to Matheson Constructors and construction started in February.
The Barrie Allandale Transit Terminal will be located within Barrie’s Allandale area to centrally locate an inter-regional transit hub with adjacency to the existing rail corridor. This hub will host transit services and connections between Simcoe County, Muskoka, and the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).
Also planned, a Downtown Mini Hub will include bus stops and sheltered waiting areas located on Maple Avenue and support downtown revitalization objectives.
The following activities have been completed or initiated on site recently:
- contaminated soil removal, asset removals, excavations, and foundations
- testing and inspections for compliance are ongoing. Learn about the access impacts during construction
- stage II Archaeological Monitoring continues as removals and excavations progress on site
- secondary building and north canopy permits have been received
- one of the two limiting distance agreements (LDA) has been executed between the City and Metrolinx, the second LDA is currently under review for execution
