Barrie clears zoning hurdle for defence, aerospace and advanced manufacturing growth

The City of Barrie is moving ahead with plans to attract new development in the defence, security, aerospace and advanced manufacturing sectors after an appeal of a zoning by-law amendment was withdrawn.

Council approved Zoning By-law 2026-076 as part of the implementation of the Mayor’s Direction to support the growth of defence-related industries in Barrie. The amendment was subsequently appealed to the Ontario Land Tribunal (OLT).

The appellant has since withdrawn the appeal, and the OLT has confirmed the matter is closed. Council’s approval of the zoning amendment can now proceed as approved and is final and binding.

The city says the decision clears the way for it to pursue opportunities involving businesses that support Canada’s defence needs and align with Ontario’s Defence Industrial Strategy.

Barrie is targeting growth in defence, security, aerospace and advanced manufacturing as part of its broader economic development efforts.

Officials say the sectors have the potential to strengthen the local economy and create jobs while increasing Barrie’s role in industries considered strategically important to Canada and Ontario.

The zoning amendment follows collaborative work by city staff and economic development partners to position Barrie to attract new businesses and support expansion by existing companies.
