Barrie city council has approved a 50 per cent reduction in residential development charges in an effort to support new housing construction and increase the supply of homes.
Council approved an amendment to the city’s Development Charge By-law at its Sept. 16 meeting. The reduced rates took effect Sept. 17 and apply retroactively to building permits issued on or after March 30, 2026.
Development charges are fees collected from new development to help pay for the infrastructure and services required to accommodate growth.
The city said the lower residential charges are intended to encourage new residential development and support the construction of more homes in Barrie.
The reduction applies to residential development charges and is part of the city’s efforts to create conditions for additional housing supply and more housing options for current and future residents.
