Barrie holding affordable housing symposium May 4

As part of the City of Barrie’s effort to tackle the affordable housing crisis, an Affordable Housing Symposium will be held on May 4 from 4 to 8 p.m.

The event, taking place at Southshore Community Centre (205 Lakeshore Drive, Barrie), is open to everyone. It will feature the following:

  • a screening of the documentary Searching for Home, including a question and answer session with the people featured in the documentary, as well as Dr. Naomi Thulien, the lead researcher on the film
  • a panel discussion with guests from across the housing spectrum, including an urban planner/designer, social and community services representation, and local developers
  • a showcase of some of the work done on the city’s New Foundations initiative
  • a number of booths featuring housing advocates and organizations
  • public consultation opportunities on the city’s Affordable Housing Strategy update

Staff is looking for feedback from residents, potential homeowners, businesses, and developers regarding affordable housing.

The city is updating its affordable housing strategy and safe and affordable housing is a major focus. A 10-year Affordable Housing Strategy in 2015. An updated Affordable Housing Strategy will build plans for new opportunities for creating affordable housing as Barrie continues to grow. The strategy will be based on a solid understanding of Barrie’s housing market and the housing needs of residents seeking affordable and attainable housing.

The assessment will help determine the existing housing stock, gaps in housing types, and a needs estimation of housing supply. A Housing Needs Assessment is an important tool to determine the near- and long-term demand for housing and current gaps. The analysis will also identify affordable housing needs across the housing spectrum and provide a better understanding of the specific factors leading to the housing crisis in Barrie.
