The City of Brampton is offering residents, contractors and landlords direct access to municipal experts this month as part of efforts to promote safe construction practices at the start of the spring building season.
The initiative, tied to Building Safety Month, includes in-person “Meet the Experts” sessions at city hall on May 13 and 14, where staff will provide guidance on permits, zoning, inspections and rental housing requirements.
City officials say the sessions are aimed at helping people planning projects — from home renovations and decks to additional residential units — navigate approval processes and avoid common delays.
Staff will be available from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the atrium at Brampton City Hall, with no appointments required.
The city says early engagement can help reduce costly corrections and ensure projects meet requirements under the Ontario Building Code, which sets minimum standards for building safety. Municipal building officials review plans and conduct inspections at key stages of construction to ensure compliance.
Officials warn that starting work without the necessary permits can lead to safety risks, project delays, added costs or enforcement action.
The outreach comes as Brampton continues to manage growth and update its planning framework. Recent changes to the city’s comprehensive zoning bylaw include revised driveway width requirements aimed at improving safety and neighbourhood compatibility.
The city is also highlighting its Residential Rental Licensing program, which requires homeowners renting one to four units to obtain an annual licence at no cost. The program includes rules for registering additional residential units and ensuring compliance with zoning and building standards.
Municipal officials say building safety is a shared responsibility that helps protect homeowners, tenants and workers while supporting well-maintained communities.
More information is available on the city’s website or at the upcoming sessions.
