Building Ontario’s first award goes to Toronto long-term care home construction

Rekai Centres, a charitable not-for-profit organization providing long-term care in Toronto, has announced an agreement to finance a new 348-bed long-term care home.

“The Rekai Centre at Cherry Place is a prime example of how the Building Ontario Fund is enabling the development of crucial infrastructure in Ontario,” said Michael Fedchyshyn, CEO of the Building Ontario Fund. “Thanks to our support, this project can move from concept to reality, bringing much-needed services to a high-need community.”

rekai centreThe project at Cherry Street and Front Street, will be the first project funded by the Building Ontario Fund. The fund will provide $176.1 million in construction financing for the 13-storey facility, which will also serve as a Campus of Care.

Designed by Montgomery Sisam Architects, construction is expected to start in February and be completed in 2027.

“The need for long-term care beds for our city’s most vulnerable populations is urgent,” said Sue Graham-Nutter, CEO of Rekai Centres. “This announcement marks the culmination of years of work, and with support from the Building Ontario Fund, we are thrilled to expand our capacity and offer the care and support our community’s seniors deserve.”

  • 7,510-sq. ft. Dialysis Centre: The centre will provide on-site dialysis treatment for both residents and community members.
  • Alzheimer’s and Dementia Care: Four floors will be dedicated to residents living with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.
  • Infection Control Zone: Designed to meet strict infection prevention and control (IPAC) standards, the zone will safeguard residents and staff.
  • Rainbow Wing: A space for 2SLGBTQI+ residents that offers inclusive, culturally competent care, following the success of the initiative at Wellesley Place.
  • Respite Care: Two beds will be available for short-term respite, giving families a break while ensuring their loved ones receive high-quality care.
  • Rekai Centre for Education: In partnership with George Brown College, the centre will host educational programs for healthcare students and professionals.
  • Lab Services: On-site lab services from LifeLabs will provide timely access to testing.
  • Green Roof: A rooftop with a children’s play area, outdoor dining space, and views of the city.
  • Cultural Enrichment: A community hub for art, music, and social events.
  • Town Hall Space: A venue for meetings, events, and community gatherings.

Construction is set to begin in the first quarter of this year and be completed by December 2027.
