Cambrian College launches new carpentry diploma program

SUDBURY – Cambrian College is introducing a new, two-year Building Construction Technician – Carpentry diploma to prepare students for growing demand in residential and light commercial construction.

The program combines technical training, hands-on experience, and business fundamentals, giving students the skills to read and interpret building plans, collaborate with tradespeople, apply sustainability practices, and comply with safety and building codes.

“The construction industry needs skilled professionals who understand more than just how to build — they need people who can think critically, lead safely, and adapt to modern building standards,” said Kim Crane, interim dean of the School of Skilled Trades. “This program gives students the advanced training and real-world experience employers are looking for, while also supporting those who want to eventually run their own businesses.”

Students will complete a capstone project and take business-focused courses in their final semester. The program also offers flexible pathways, including a co-op option, a shared first year with the Carpentry and Renovation Techniques certificate, and a January start option for accelerated completion.

Graduates are prepared for entry-level roles such as framing carpenter, concrete form worker, interior systems installer, exterior finisher, door and window installer, and junior estimator. Some may also pursue entrepreneurship in the skilled trades.
