The Ontario government has broken ground on the new Children’s Treatment Centre of Chatham-Kent, a $59 million project aimed at enhancing specialized care for thousands of children and youth with special needs.

The new site will span 58,000 square feet and replace the existing treatment center, offering an expanded and state-of-the-art space to accommodate more children and youth requiring specialized support.

The groundbreaking ceremony marked the beginning of construction which is expected to cost $65.9 million.

“Building a new state-of-the-art Children’s Treatment Centre in Chatham-Kent is a crucial step in ensuring that families across the province have access to specialized services, regardless of their location,” said Ontario’s Minister of Children, Community and Social Services, Michael Parsa. “We are grateful for the efforts of the Chatham-Kent Children’s Treatment Centre Foundation and local advocates who made this project possible.”

The new center will provide a variety of services, including speech-language pathology, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, and support for children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder, among other specialized care options. Additionally, it will offer Ontario Autism Program services and coordinate care for children with multiple or complex special needs.
