St. Lawrence College of Arts and Technology has announced the sale of land to the City of Brockville, to enable the construction of the Multi Use Recreational Facility at the Brockville Memorial Centre.

In 1980 the city leased land from the College to allow the construction of the current Memorial Centre. With the plans to expand this facility, additional lands were needed from the College to facilitate the expansion. Once it became evident that the City required ownership of the leased lands the City and College collaborated to work on the acquisition.

“We recognize the importance of collaborating with our community to foster growth and development,” said Les Casson, Dean, Faculty of Creative Industries and Brockville Campus. “SLC’s partnership with the City of Brockville for the expansion of the Multi Use Recreational Facility is a great example of working together to support projects that benefit not only our students and employees, but also the broader community.”

The purchase agreement includes 9.26 acres of land from the College for $806,000. The sale price of the land is at a fair market value, which was established through a valuation conducted by a professional appraiser.

Architecture and engineering firm IDEA/N45 has been contracted to provide a detailed design for the facility and the project will be ready for construction once funding is identified and approved.

“For several years the city has been looking for a suitable location for a second ice pad, with expansion at the Memorial Centre being determined to be the best and most cost-effective location,” said Brockville Mayor Matt Wren. “The college has been an excellent partner, working with the city to make sure that this important project can move forward.”
