The City of Mississauga is undertaking a comprehensive review of its Urban Design Program, a move officials say will help modernize design standards, support housing delivery and ensure future development aligns with the city’s long-term planning objectives.
The review forms part of the municipality’s broader efforts to create well-designed communities while making it easier to build new housing and improve affordability. City staff are seeking input from residents, developers, architects, planners, builders and other industry stakeholders as the process gets underway.
As part of the first phase of engagement, an online consultation process is running from June 22 to July 31. Participants are invited to watch an informational video, complete a survey and submit comments or questions through the project website. Feedback will help identify what residents and stakeholders value most in urban design and where improvements may be needed. Information is available at mississauga.ca/urbandesign.
Mississauga’s Urban Design Program provides the framework and guidelines that influence how buildings, streetscapes, parks and public spaces are designed throughout the city. The review will examine how the program can be improved to better reflect current development realities and community expectations while supporting future growth.
According to the city, the initiative also responds to recommendations from the Mayor’s Housing Task Force and will help align urban design policies with the forthcoming Mississauga Official Plan 2051.
“The review is an opportunity to ensure our urban design program continues to support high-quality development while meeting the needs of residents and industry,” the city stated.
For the development industry, the review could have implications for future design requirements and approval processes.
Municipal officials have indicated that the goal is to create vibrant, attractive and functional communities while reducing barriers to housing construction. By updating urban design guidelines, the city hopes to provide greater clarity and consistency for applicants while ensuring new projects integrate effectively into existing neighbourhoods.
The review comes as municipalities across Ontario face pressure to accelerate housing delivery while maintaining design quality and community character.
Projects such as Applewood Towns, developed by Hickory Limited Partnership with architecture by KIRKOR Architects and Planners and landscape architecture by MEP DESIGN INC. are examples of contemporary housing developments shaped by urban design principles.
Public realm projects, including the Living Root Bridge artwork in Meadowvale by Bau & Ćos Studio, also demonstrate the role urban design plays in creating distinctive public spaces and community identity, according to the city.
