The City of Thunder Bay has announced the launch of a new online portal which makes it easier for contractors and homeowners to apply for building permits.

The new portal allows users to track the progress of their building permit applications and see which work is taking place in their area.

The service was previously only available by paper application which had to be brought in to the development services office during business hours.

thunder bayThe online portal is now able to accept all types of residential building permit applications including new houses, additions, small multi-unit dwellings, apartments, and demolition.

“The upgrade to the portal allows all of our customers to use a completely digital system,” said Joel DePeuter, director — development services.

“Our customers have been asking for a fully digital system, so they can apply for a building permit where they are, when they want.”

Building permits are required for a variety of construction projects including plumbing system changes, and demolition work.

The new online portal is part of the city’s digital strategy which aims to bring more services online and available 24 hours a day, seven  days a week.
