The City of Timmins and Miller Paving were recognized at the 2020 Ontario Good Roads Association (OGRA) Conference in Toronto, with the 2019 Municipal Paving Project of the Year Award.

According to OGRA, “the purpose of the award is to promote and recognize the successful collaboration between municipalities and HMA producers for excellence and innovation in paving projects in Ontario.”

The project submitted by the City of Timmins and Miller Paving for consideration was the 2019 segment of the Connecting Link, completed Aug. 30, 2019, consisting of the reconstruction of Highway 101 from 0.4km east of Goldale Street, easterly for 1.3km.

“It is such an incredible honour for our teams to receive this award. The condition of our roads is something we often complain about, as our harsh winters wreak havoc on our infrastructure,” said Mayor George Pirie.

“We are extremely proud of our teams and our local contractors for being recognized for excellence and innovation by Ontario Good Roads. Most of us have likely driven this new segment of highway and can attest to this job extremely well done.”

This project was unique, not only for the fact that it was four lifts of asphalt, but the fact that three different materials were created for and used for this contract.

The paving methodology also consisted of paving from two different asphalt plants, utilizing a shuttle buggy to ensure consistency in the mix, paving the lanes in echelon three pavers wide as well as paving continuously to ensure no transverse joints in any area within the 1.3km.

Thanks to amazing crew coordination, all of the paving took place in just eight days. Specialty rutting resistance testing also formed part of this contract.

The great relationship between the City of Timmins, Aecom and Miller Paving was critical in ensuring the successful outcome of this project.
