City of Windsor recruiting members for committee of adjustment

The City of Windsor is inviting qualified and community-minded residents to apply for two current vacancies on the committee of adjustment, an independent decision-making body that is responsible for hearing applications, receiving public input and rendering decisions based on the merits of each application, applicable legislation, and information provided by City staff. Decisions made by the committee can have lasting impacts on individual properties, neighbourhoods, and the broader community.

The City is seeking applicants who bring knowledge, professionalism, and sound judgment to the role. Ideal candidates will have experience or background in areas such as Committee of Adjustment matters, city planning, architecture, real estate law, or development, as well as a general understanding of committee, board, and commission processes.

Successful applicants will also demonstrate:

  • General knowledge of the Planning Act, municipal by-laws, building and construction, and City operations.
  • The ability to dedicate time to reviewing and researching applications prior to public hearings.
  • Strong analytical skills to visualize proposed development and its implications on surrounding properties, neighbourhoods, and communities based on drawings, plans, and written reports.
  • Professional, courteous communication skills in a public meeting setting.
  • Integrity, including the ability to recognize and declare conflicts of interest
  • Comfort with technology, including email communication and virtual meetings via Zoom or Microsoft Teams.
