Collingwood buys downtown property for market square

The Town of Collingwood has officially acquired 84 Hurontario St., a vacant downtown property located across from the Collingwood Town Hall.

Collingwood Town Council was approached by the Downtown Collingwood Business Improvement Area (BIA) Board of Management when it was listed for sale earlier this year.

The property was identified as important because it links Hurontario Street and the Pine Street parking lot and could be “an ideal setting for a future market square.”

On Aug. 18, council directed staff to negotiate a purchase and sale agreement with the property owner and last week the $1.7 million sale was announced, including a $100,000 charitable donation from the seller ‘Mon Desir Canada Inc.’ to the Town of Collingwood.

“This is a valuable parcel of land for the future of our vibrant and historical downtown. As the Council representative on the BIA Board of Management that made the initial recommendation to council, I was pleased to see the support and collaboration from Council to pursue the acquisition,” said Mayor Keith Hull.

The future use will be decided by the incoming council.
