Construction has begun on a new poultry research centre in Elora. The Ontario Poultry Research Centre is being built with more than $24 million in provincial funding through Agricultural Research and Innovation Ontario (ARIO). Construction should be completed by is summer 2028.

More than 220 construction jobs will be created.

Research at the new facility will focus on animal nutrition, behaviour, genetics, biosecurity, production costs, health and welfare, as well as reproduction, meat quality and food safety. Dedicated areas will accommodate layers and pullets, broilers and hatcheries. The centre will also include specialized and commercial research wings designed to support a range of research programs.

It’s a partnership between the Ontario government, through ARIO, the province’s four poultry industry feather boards and the University of Guelph. Chicken Farmers of Ontario, Egg Farmers of Ontario, the Ontario Broiler Hatching Egg and Chick Commission and Turkey Farmers of Ontario are contributing to the project alongside the provincial government.

Also, $250,000 was provided through the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership for part of the design work.
