Construction is officially underway on the new Fancsy Family Hospital in Windsor-Essex, a project the Ontario government says will expand health-care capacity and improve access to care across the region.
The province is investing more than $202 million in the new hospital, which will add space for more than 100 additional beds and create a modern health-care facility of about two million square feet.
The new hospital is part of Ontario’s broader plan to invest $64 billion in more than 50 major hospital projects over the next decade.
Contract 1 Diagnostic and Treatment Block will increase capacity by improving access to services for our community and enhancing care environments. This project is focused on the health and well-being of the Windsor-Essex region and beyond and will support staff, professional staff, volunteers, patients, families, and caregivers.
As part of the design, leading sustainability models including the Canada Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system will be used to create a greener future.
“As Windsor-Essex continues to grow, our government is ensuring families and workers continue to have access to convenient, world-class health-care services close to home,” Premier Doug Ford said. “With more than 100 additional beds, a 24/7 emergency department and surgical services, the new Fancsy Family Hospital will connect more patients to specialized care where and when they need it.”
Once complete, the hospital will bring a range of health-care services together in one location, including:
- More than 100 additional beds, bringing the total to nearly 600
- A new 24/7 emergency department
- Cancer care services
- Trauma care
- Maternal and newborn care
- Surgical and critical care services
- Neurology and cardiology services
- More single-patient rooms to improve privacy and help reduce infection risks
The project is expected to provide more connected care for patients throughout Windsor and surrounding communities.
“More than the start of construction, it marks the beginning of a new chapter in health care for our region,” said Andrew Dowie, MPP for Windsor-Tecumseh. “We are proud to celebrate this historic achievement and the brighter, healthier future it will help build for generations to come.”
Anthony Leardi, MPP for Essex, said the groundbreaking represents a move from planning into construction.
“Breaking ground means we are moving from planning to building,” Leardi said. “Our government made a commitment to invest in health-care infrastructure, and today we are seeing that commitment become reality.”
