The City of Mississauga has launched the 2021 construction season with plans to spend more than $76 million in transportation and stormwater infrastructure.
Construction projects within the city’s Roads and Stormwater Capital Programs involve repair and maintenance of critical infrastructure including road resurfacing, sidewalk and multi-use trail construction, bridge repairs, creek and erosion control work and construction of new stormwater management facilities.
“As our city continues to grow and mature, we need to ensure that our infrastructure is kept in good repair through regular maintenance so that we can move people safely through our city and achieve our Vision Zero goals,” said Mayor Bonnie Crombie.
Construction projects are deemed essential under Ontario Regulation 82/20 – Closure of Places of Non-Essential Businesses. In total, there are 21 construction projects planned for 2021 with 11 projects from 2020 continuing into 2021.
“We have a busy construction season planned for 2021, right on the heels of our very successful 2020 season, which saw the completion of 27 projects, despite the limitations and delays caused by the pandemic,” said Geoff Wright, Commissioner, Transportation and Works.
“While we continue to do the essential work that makes travelling safer and easier for all road users, we do so with the health and safety of residents, workers and contractors as a top priority. We will continue to work closely with our contractors to ensure that the Occupational Health and Safety Act is upheld and that all on-site best practices are followed as recommended by public health officials.”
New this year is a Field Ambassador Program that will help to improve communications about construction projects.
“It is our goal that the Field Ambassador will have a presence at the construction sites and will be available for residents and businesses to ask questions, share their feedback and get more information on the project,” said Helen Noehammer, director, infrastructure planning and engineering services
A Construction Pest Control Program will also launch during the 2021 construction season to address concerns about rat sightings near construction sites. The program aligns with the Region of Peel’s Rat Control Subsidy Pilot Program, which helps residents with the costs to improve rat issues on the exterior of their residential properties. The = pilot program is available from March 22, 2021 to March 31, 2022.
Major construction is planned along the Hurontario corridor this year, between the Port Credit GO Station and Highway 407, as well as significant progress being made on Metrolinx’s Hurontario Light Rail Transit (HuLRT) Project. It’s expected that most of the Hurontario corridor will be under construction by the fall. Once completed in late 2024, the HuLRT will transform Mississauga’s transit system and further connect residents and businesses along this corridor.
Planned construction projects:
- Residential road resurfacing – 28 streets – 12 km
- Major and industrial road resurfacing – eight streets – 9 km
Creek and erosion control work:
- Mary Fix Creek (downstream of Dundas Street West)
- Etobicoke Creek (Ponytrail Drive to Bloor Street)
- Cooksville Creek (King Street)
- Credit River bank stabilization (adjacent to Ostler Court at the Credit Valley Golf and Country Club lands)
Storm sewer improvements and replacement on Britannia Road East
Dredging and maintenance of four stormwater management ponds located at:
- Creditview Road and Bristol Road West
- Winston Churchill Boulevard between Highway 403 and Credit Valley Road
- Winston Churchill Boulevard between Highway 403 and Artesian Drive
- Southwest corner of Winston Churchill Boulevard and Tacc Drive
Construction of a new stormwater management facility at Mississauga Valley Park
Repair of three bridges and two culvert structures:
- Old Derry Road bridge over Credit River
- Bloor Street bridge over Little Etobicoke Creek
- Eglinton Avenue bridge over Etobicoke Creek
- Orr Road culvert
- Culvert creek enclosure for future Creekbank Road extension
Other road construction projects:
- Resurfacing of Matheson Boulevard including a cycle track (Creekbank Road to east City limit) – approximately 3.2 km
- Road improvement on Mississauga Road (north of Sevenoaks Drive) – 200 m
- The rehabilitation of The Collegeway (Winston Churchill Boulevard to Mississauga Road), including the installation of cycle tracks from Winston Churchill Boulevard to the east leg of South Millway, new traffic signals and street lighting. Noise wall replacement and utility relocation are scheduled to begin in 2021 followed by road construction in 2022 – 3.1 km
Other work:
- Construction of 2.3 km of new noise walls
- Construction of 3.4 km of new sidewalks
- Construction of 4.1 km of new multi-use trails
- Replacement of retaining walls along north side Dundas Street at Erindale Park entrance and east of Robinson Street
- Torbram Road sanitary sewer tunneling under Metrolinx tracks
