A 43-year-old man died Tuesday in an industrial mishap at the construction site of a Welland retirement complex.

First responders arrived about 2:30 p.m. and found a worker in critical condition after a piece of construction material had fallen, striking the worker, Niagara Regional Police confirmed.

The worker was transported to nearby Welland hospital where he died from his injuries, police reported.

The incident remains under investigation by police detectives, the Ontario Ministry of Labour and the coroner’s office.

Police would not confirm reports on social media that a piece of concrete fell on the man.

He was also unable to confirm that a second patient was taken to hospital after going into shock from witnessing the incident.

The construction site is the future home of The Grand Canal Retirement Residence, located along the east bank of the Welland Recreational Canal.

The facility is being built by PlazaComm, owned by parent company PlazaCorp, and is expected to be completed by late 2020 or early 2021.

The five storey, 130-unit senior living home on King Street beside Welland Community Wellness Complex will include a game room, theatre, large dining room, bistro, beauty parlour and spa. PlazaComm swapped land with the city in order to build along the waterway.
